vale maestro

There once was a sleek greyhound
That sauntered into my yard
Followed by a gentleman –
Of song, he was the bard
I love to sing, I said.
Sing me a few bars, said he.
Nonplussed, I sang Blue Moon.
You can hold a tune, I see –
And I can skill your voice
He said – without giving pause
So, we began our path
With scores of songs and good laughs
I miss your beaming smile
And the look of “you got it” –
When I hit the note right
As, indeed, you knew I might
Goodbye, my dear maestro
Your song is now at its end
But we who do remain –
Will sing fondly in your name
